“Film Festivals and Urban Ethnography” Film festivals are usually seen as eventsembedded in and reproducing the world of global film –canons, production, distribution and glamour. Yet, as citiesthemselves compete for global recognition, film festivals join sporting events, iconic buildings, and other markers of global culture and prestige. At the same time, the content and discussionsaround films also forces us to analyze them as loci for the experience of aglobal public sphere where uncomfortable local themes of rights, identities andinequalities may also be brought forth. Hong Kong will provide primary examples.
